Spring Writes comes to Ithaca this weekend!

Spring has come to central New York. That means the temperature bounces from 50 to 80 to 35 up to 65, down below freezing for a couple of nights, and then back to 72. Or maybe 90. Anything from wind to snow to thunderstorms to love can be in the air. Flowers manage to blossom. Birds build their nests. (I’m trying to discourage one who’s targeted my front porch.) College students and faculty celebrate the end of classes. And Ithacans turn their minds to books.

There are two major literary events happening in my town this weekend. One is the opening of the semiannual Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library book sale, which will have more than a quarter of a million books, videos, and recordings for sale. Although I don’t plan to camp out on the sidewalk to be first in line (others do!), I’ll be there. Several times. Prices decrease as the sale goes on, so I usually look for my must-have books on the first weekend and then return later for bargain-hunting and impulse-buying.

This weekend is also Spring Writes, an annual literary festival held in Ithaca and featuring local authors. Spring Writes is pretty new, in its third year, and this is the first time I’m participating. On Saturday, I’ll be a panelist discussing Life After Publication: The Pleasantries and Pitfalls of Success (Tompkins County Public Library, 12:30-2:00). On Sunday, my writers’ group is doing a group reading at Buffalo Street Books from 4:00-5:30, with a reception to follow. There are tons of fun events going on–whether you’re a published author, an aspiring one, or an enthusiastic reader; whether you prefer literary fiction, genre fiction, or sticking to the facts; whether you want to hone your own writing skills, learn about the business, or have a good laugh.

If you find yourself in Ithaca this weekend, either on purpose or because you wandered off an Interstate and got lost on the back roads, stop by and say hello!

Vampires, Werewolves & Fairies, Oh My!

It’s been a long quiet spell here. I’ve been working on Deadtown #5 and fleshing out some ideas for other projects. I’m designing my own do-it-yourself writing retreat, and will be back with updates on how that works (as well as how it’s working out).

Today, though, I’ve emerged from the shadows for an interview at Vampires, Werewolves & Fairies, Oh My! Vicky stops by to answer a few questions, as well. I’m giving away a signed copy of the winner’s choice of any book from my Deadtown series, open internationally. So stop by and say hello for a chance to win!

And check back here next week as I get some posts going.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Lately, I’ve been thinking about romance–and not just because my wonderful husband sent me these lovely roses for Valentine’s Day.

I’ve always considered myself as first and foremost a mystery or urban fantasy writer. A touch of romance was fine, but the primary emphasis was always on setting the world to rights–revealing the murderer or driving back the demons.

Recently, though, I’ve been reading–and enjoying–more romance. I’ve been craving the happily ever after. I want characters to succeed not just in saving the world but in finding personal happiness. I’m interested in the psychology of longing–how it can turn to obsession or fulfillment. And I’ve got several ideas of how to explore that in a novel.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, what are some of your favorite romances? I’m a fan of the Gothic, and recently I’ve enjoyed The Restorer by Amanda Stevens and The Demon Lover by Juliet Dark. And of course there’s my favorite Gothic romance of all time: Wuthering Heights. How about you? What books would you recommend for Valentine’s Day?

COVER REVEAL: Are you ready for Vicky’s close-up?

I just got the OK to share the cover for Darklands, which shows Vicky up-close and personal. Over the course of the series, we first sawVicky from the back on the cover of Deadtown, as she clutches her flaming sword and looks out over the city. Then in Hellforged, we saw her profile as she watches to the side. Bloodstone shows her from the front, but at a distance.

Now, for the cover of Darklands, artist Don Sipley (who’s created all the art for the series) moves in close to show Vicky wielding her sword.

So what do you think?

Happy New Year!

I managed to miss the entire month of December on the blog, thanks to a combination of revising Darklands, an influx of day-job work, holiday preparations, and a bout of the flu. Except for the flu, all that was good, but it took a lot of my time.

So 2011 ended in kind of a blur. (Not the alcohol-induced kind, either!) As 2012 begins, I’m not bothering with resolutions that I’ll forget about by the end of the month. But I do have some goals for the year:

Write two novels. For all of you who’ve been waiting for the sequel to Peace, Love, and Murder, this is the year. I’m working on it now, in fact. Also up, of course, is book #5 in my Deadtown series.

Write some short stories and a novella. I’d like to branch out in my writing, and writing shorter pieces would be a great way to try new things.

Get more musical. I took years of piano lessons as a child. For the past couple of years, a keyboard has gathered dust in my office. I’d like to learn how to play again. And the nice thing about an electronic keyboard is I can plug in some headphones and spare my husband the sound of my baby steps as I re-learn. :)

Cultivate generosity. This one’s a little abstract, so I hope I can explain what I mean. As I get older, I become more and more convinced that the most important thing in life is generosity of spirit. I see this as a way of living openly, rather than defensively, and appreciating others for who they are. How do you do that? I’m going to try a combination of meditation, appreciation, listening, and taking the time to say thank you.

I’ve got other goals—writing weekly book recommendations, taking a vacation (our last was in 2007), getting in my half-hour of exercise each day, blogging more regularly—but if I can manage the four listed above, I’ll consider 2012 a success.

Happy New Year! I hope 2012 will be a happy, meaningful, and successful year for you.
