Albacon this weekend

For most of the U.S., the next several days will be Columbus Day weekend. To those of us gathering in Albany, NY for science fiction, fantasy, and gaming fun, it’s . . . Albacon!

Here’s my schedule:

Friday, October 8

10:00 a.m. Getting Started as a Writer. How to organize yourself, your thoughts and get rolling. Henderson, Holzner, Ivey, Pinto (M)

11:00 a.m. Pitching your Project to an Agent or Editor. Finding a hook, being direct and selling your pitch. Hartwell, Holzner, R Miller (M)

3:00 p.m. Social Media & Promotion. How to use the myriad frequencies of social media to promote your work without allowing it to suck up all your time. Alexandre (M), Holzner, Laity, Roman, Ventrella

6:00 p.m. Not a Vampire: Horror Beyond Bloodsuckers. Forget vamps: we have zombies! Not to mention ghosts, Lovecraftian eldritch horrors, shape-shifters and more. Alexandre (M), Henderson, Holzner, Kessler, Mason, Sawicki, Schwabach

Saturday, October 9

4:00 p.m. Bringing History to Life. From steampunk to alt history, the past is more present than ever: how do you make it believable without using all of your research? Holzner (M), Jamison, Mead, McCullough, Park, Schwabach

Sunday, October 10

12:00 noon Sex & Gender in Spec Fic. Why are male characters still the default for so many writers? Does “strong female character” just mean she kicks ass? And what about sexuality other than F/M? D’Arc, Holzner (M), Kessler, Price, Schwabach

I’ll have lots of time to talk to people and attend other panels. I’m particularly looking forward to panels on paranormal romance vs. urban fantasy, the mainstreaming of genre fiction, steampunk, and the science of science fiction.

I’m also looking forward to getting in some leaf-peeping (driving across New York state and admiring the fall foliage), as well as squeezing in a visit with family and friends who live nearby.

Enjoy your weekend! šŸ™‚

It was great to meet you at that early morning session and thanks for the advice. That book I was “Techniques of the Selling Writer” by Dwight V. Swain, published by University of Oklahoma Press.

Great meeting you, too, Elizabeth. Yes, I thought that was probably the book you meant. Thanks for refreshing my memory about the title!
