Darklands Reviews

RT Book Reviews

Part of what makes the Deadtown novels so compelling is how Holzner employs themes of discrimination and fear. Vicky’s determination and stubbornness are alternately her greatest asset and her most dangerous weakness. Holzner generates complications and tension with grace.

A Book Obsession

With each book in the Deadtown series, I only get sucked further in, this installment even more so considering the way things ended. While not a cliffhanger in the strictest sense, a lot of things are left in the balance, leaving me desperate to find out what happens next. Darklands was incredibly action packed, leaving me literally on the edge of my seat. Combine that with the intense emotional moments and Vicky’s character growth, and Darklands made for an incredibly entertaining installment that cannot be missed!

I Smell Sheep

This is another home run in the Deadtown series with page turning action, humor, clever world building and a twist at the end I didn’t see coming. Love it when that happens.

Bitten by Books

With each installment, the reader gets treated to a wild ride of exploration as Holzner depicts another alternate plane within her intricate universe. As each of its predecessors in the Deadtown series does, the terrific Darklands strikes an ideal balance between action, introspection, world-building, and character development. Vicky’s family dynamics, despite the paranormal aspects, feel realistic and genuine, and along with new developments in relationships keep the reader invested in how things play out. In each outing, layers of the mythology underpinning the story get revealed, adding richness to the tale. As always, the author’s deft use of humor hits just the right notes, comfortably sharing space with the emotional moments. All urban fantasy lovers should be reading this superb series, and this reviewer will be first in line for book five.

Whatchamacallit Reviews

I’ve been a fan of the Deadtown series and this is probably my favorite book of the series thus far. I enjoyed the medieval setting of the limbo-like underworld, the new characters, and the action and new spins on the story. I can’t wait for the next book, and would have no trouble recommending this one to anyone who likes urban fantasy.

Good Book Alert

For me, it starts with Holzner’s brilliant characterization and unfolds from there. Victory Vaughn isn’t exactly human in the sense she’s a shapeshifter, but she is human in every other way – in the ways that count. I would follow her through ten more books. She’s that good of a character.

Midtown Underground

This Urban Fantasy was a great read. Although this is the fourth installment, it was my first read in the Deadtown Series. Despite that, I found it easy to acclimate myself to the world of Deadtown and found the main character, Victory Vaughn extremely likeable and a very strong female lead. I think my main reason for liking her is because Ms. Holzner made her so relatable. She’s experienced a huge loss, she is close to her family though they sometimes butt heads, and despite having a man that loves her, she sometimes doubts herself. Despite the fact that she isn’t “human”, this made her a real character to me.

Fall Into Books

Darklands is an action-packed adventure and makes a wonderful addition to the Deadtown series. Each book in this series gets better, and Darklands is no exception. This novel offers romance, character growth, and, as I said, action. This is one book that you don’t want to miss.

That’s What I’m Talking About

Ms. Holzner’s world is engrossing and engaging. It’s not easy, but she always finds a way to pull together all of the pieces of the story by the end of each book. In the end, Vicky must take a long hard look at what is in her heart and decide what is worth fighting for. I love it!

The Literate Kitty

If you’re already a Holzner fan, pick up Darklands now; if you’re a UF fan but have yet to read her, I’d recommend starting at the beginning (because while you could read these alone, it would be a shame to miss out on how we got to this point). Either way, this one’s definitely recommended. 🙂

Writing the Witchy Way

Holzner not only provides nonstop action from page one, she also accomplishes a feat that most writers find nearly impossible: summing up the important information from previous books so well, you can pick up book four and read it without having read any of the previous novels. (Although I highly recommend them all, and once you get hooked on this series, I promise you will want to follow Vicky’s journey from the very beginning.)

Wolf Majick

Vicky is the kind of girl who I would want on my side in a fight. Even with the odds against her she is willing to risk her life, and maybe her afterlife, to save the world.

Mama Knows Books

Have you ever had a book you get and can’t wait to read? I mean you open the mail and start reading immediately. Well this was one of those. As soon as I opened the package and saw what it was, I started reading. . . Like the other books in this series I was pulled into Vicky’s world. The book was fast paced and kept me reading until the end.

Zombie Girl Shambling

The world that comes to life in this series is chock full of emotional impact, characters that practically breathe and a twisting plot that never ends. The action is spot on . . . Nancy Holzner does a superb job of crafting a world that I wouldn’t mind spending some time in.
