Hellforged Reviews

RT Book Reviews:

For demon-slayer Victory Vaughn, intensity and intrigue are revved way up as she is faced with a possible trap of destiny. The thrills are nonstop in Holzner’s latest Deadtown novel as the action races from continent to continent and into the reaches of hell itself. Even better than the first book, this series is becoming highly addictive!

Fantasy Literature:

Deadtown was good, but Hellforged is even better. A superficial glance would suggest that this series is typical leather-clad bad-girl urban fantasy, but that conclusion would be a mistake. Dr. Holzner surprised me in Deadtown with her writing ability, and her original twists on some classic urban fantasy tropes, and Hellforged surprised me by taking everything I liked about the first book a few steps further. The writing is airtight; her characters have been honed to an edge. There is comedy, drama, romance, and a whole lot of ass kicking. Hellforged is the total package, and a superb example of why I still love urban fantasy.

Bitten by Books:

Holzner’s expertise as a mystery author shines brightly throughout the narrative as she flawlessly connects threads of both the tale told in Hellforged and the overall story arc of the Deadtown series. This fabulous novel skillfully combines several distinct elements into a highly-satisfying whole: action, adventure, suspense, Welsh mythology, humor, and pitch-perfect characters that live and breathe on the page . . . This excellent series belongs in the collection of all urban fantasy fans . . .

The Literate Kitty:

Hellforged is a darker tale than Deadtown, with less levity and a considerable ramping-up of the terror. As difficult as Vicky’s primary task was in the first book, it is many times harder, here, and we feel all of her uncertainty, guilt, and sorrow–as well as the physical pain and fear–keenly.

I really, really like how Holzner’s mind works. She writes some great dialogue, and she always presents a fine sense of place or space. She also manages to make me care deeply about the most minor of characters; I was very saddened by the zombie deaths, even though Vicky only knew each of them but slightly. (It’s rare for an author to achieve that kind of connection with a character so soon to be cast aside, but this author always does.)

Amberkatze’s Book Blog:

[R]ead this book and the first book Deadtown. A wide range of paranormals and a fast paced spectacular story awaits you. Nancy Holzner is definitely an author to watch and with this second book she has secured her place on my must read list.

That’s What I’m Talking About:

The plot was smart and exciting; I enjoyed watching Vicki attempt to solve the mystery of the prophecy while trying to keep the world safe. Although it had a bit of familiarity about it, the storyline was original and kept me glued to the pages.  There were even a few surprise twists and turns that I didn’t expect.

Intense Whisper:

In Hellforged new evils arise and all hell breaks loose. The zombies are targeted and it is up to Vicky to defend them while battling her own demon. Literally. The demons Vicky chases in Hellforged are bigger, badder and so much more fun. I love the unexpected twists and turns.

In this sequel to DEADTOWN, Nancy Holzner provides an exciting rollercoaster ride on the supernatural side! I love how I never knew where the story was going and all the characters (including the doorman) are so real . . .  I heartily recommend this delicious page-turner!

Falcata Times:

What Nancy does well is create drama with characters that the reader will love, backs that up with some seriously delicious prose and tops it off with a good dollop of kick ass action that is so fulfilling it feels like a five course banquet. Add to this dialogue and backstory to die for (or undie in some of the cast’s cases) which leaves you desiring more. A real treat and one that demonstrates that Deadtown is here to stay.

Other Worlds:

Following up a well-received debut novel is always a bit tricky, but Nancy Holzner doesn’t miss a beat with the second book in her Deadtown paranormal series.

Fresh Fiction:

Between long-lost (and dangerous relatives), a major threat to humanity, and a resurgence of demon activity beyond previously known scales Vicky has a lot to fight through. Holzner has her kicking ass with plenty of humor and thrills (and a touch or two of romance) to make HELLFORGED an even better read than Deadtown was, which makes me that much more eager to get my hands on the books yet to come. One of the most inventive urban fantasy series out there.
